新照顧者指南

You've just become a carer. Start here.

Most people become a caregiver overnight, after a fall, a diagnosis, or a phone call. This guide covers the first few weeks.

The first four steps

01

Have the conversation

Ask what they want, not what you fear. Independence is usually the answer.

02

Walk the flat

Bathroom mats, loose wires, lighting at night, and where a phone sits at 3am.

03

Gather the paperwork

ID, medical records, medication list, doctor's details, insurance and allowances.

04

Set up a safety net

A personal alarm, a neighbour who has a key, and an agreed family contact order.

Home safety checklist

  • Non-slip mat in the bathroom and a grab rail beside the toilet
  • A night light between the bedroom and the bathroom
  • Everyday items moved to waist height, no step stools
  • Emergency numbers written large and stuck to the fridge
  • A personal alarm worn, not left on a table
